Since 1999, European photographers have been invited to Japan to visually document how they see this extraordinary country and its culture. In 2009, three artists—one each from Austria, Lithuania and Germany—have created images that show Japan as it really is.
Vienna and Beijing in Linz (22.10.2009)
Strange bedfellows, wouldn’t you say!? Strange but true: there’s a work that does indeed bring there great cities together: THE LAND OF SMILES, an operetta by Franz Lehár. Now, the European Capital of Culture is staging an extraordinary new production of this classic work.
A Thousand Voices in St. Mary’s Cathedral (22.10.2009)
The Mariendom in Linz is Austria's largest church in terms of seating capacity. On the National Holiday this coming Monday, it will serve as the venue for a production of equally superlative dimensions: What is probably the largest church concert ever held in Linz.
Upper Austria is Design Land (22.10.2009)
The accent is on design in Linz09’s autumn lineup. We’ve already spotlighted THE “CASE” OF FORUM DESIGN exhibition and the big DESIGNLAND project in the last issue of our newsletter. But the focus won’t just be on historic events and top-name designers; we’re featuring leading-edge trends too. So remember: It pays to pay a call on Linz, and the train affords an affordable way to get here!
More Than Music: Festival 4020 Considers God (22.10.2009)
“God” is the theme of the second edition of Festival 4020 to be staged during the Capital of Culture year. “Song” kicked things off last spring. But the continuation is by no means an encounter with sacred music; rather, it’s an inquiry into what’s behind it, into what God is.

The international PEN Club will be hosting a celebration of literature October 22-24 in Linz. The watchwords of this get-together are “Words, words, nothing but words…?” The lineup includes about 30 readings, panel discussions and literary excursions.
A Multiplicity of Interstices (15.10.2009)

Linz09 Mourns the Passing of Keith Goddard (13.10.2009)
Keith Goddard, a big-hearted man who showed us how to persevere where others would have given up and whose accomplishments brought Africa and Europe closer together, died during the night of October 9, 2009 after a long, severe illness. Linz09 mourns the passing of a good friend, project associate, musician, composer and human rights activist.
Sounds above the Ether... (08.10.2009)
Everyone knows how wonderful a church can sound when it’s filled with music. Since early September, the SONUS LOCI project has been presenting new music in Linz churches. SONUS LOCI AETHERIS is the title of the concluding concert in which 10 churches will be interlinked with sound.
Linz, International Capital of Design (08.10.2009)
Once upon a time, Linz was – briefly – the epicenter of the international design scene. 1980 was the year of Forum Design, a seminal exhibition with a now-legendary catalog, “Design is Invisible.” This major undertaking went down in flames amidst a financial scandal. In the Capital of Culture year, Linz is reprising its role as Design City with two projects featuring big-name participants.
For the absolutely, positively last time: How crazy is Linz? (08.10.2009)
THE ILL RABBIT has turned Linz topsy-turvy over the last few months—with exhibitions, projects, interventions and actions that were consistently a little bit “different.” And, after all, that was the whole point: To find out just how odd you can be in Linz, and how much craziness the Capital of Culture can handle! Now, we’re celebrating the bunny in high style one more time at the Grand Finale on October 10.
Interfaith Communication (08.10.2009)
Relationships between different religious faiths are often characterized by a very high potential for friction. In most cases, this is due to erroneous perceptions, superficial knowledge and prejudices. Nevertheless, Jews, Christians and Moslems share a lot more than one might initially think. The ABRAHAM’S HEIRS project is hosting a conversational and musical trialog among the three largest Abrahamic religions.
The Dead Puppet Theatre in Linz (08.10.2009)
A production being staged in conjunction with the DOPPELGÄNGER theater festival posits the construction of an extraordinary personal relationship: Could it have been possible that Hitler and Wittgenstein were acquainted? Sounds a bit cryptic? Just you wait!
Explore Linz! (08.10.2009)
City tours can give us new ways of looking at urban spaces that we thought were so very familiar, and reveal details that we somehow just failed to notice before. Due to popular demand, two Linz09 projects are reprising their program of guided tours. The offerings include historical explorations and a stroll through multicultural Linz.
All texts before October 2006 are only available in German.
