Impressions of a Distant Land...

Since 1999, European photographers have been invited to Japan to visually document how they see this extraordinary country and its culture. In 2009, three artists—one each from Austria, Lithuania and Germany—have created images that show Japan as it really is.
The occidental view of Asia is often distorted by stereotypical images, clichés and deep-seated preconceptions of what life is like there. The reality, as a matter of fact, is quite different. Shedding light on this are the photographers who were invited to the Land of the Rising Sun in conjunction with the EUROPEAN EYES ON JAPAN project. This year, Andrew Phelps from Austria, Arturas Valiauga from Lithuania and Hans-Christian Schink from Germany traveled to Niigata Prefecture in northern Japan. The images they recorded there will go on exhibit in the Gallery of the City of Wels at the end of this month.EUROPEAN EYES ON JAPAN
