Each of Linz09’s three types of productions—music, the performing arts, and projects—made its own individual contribution to orchestrating the Capital of Culture year program. The basic theme was the city’s identity. 220 projects spotlighted aspects of Linz’s relationship to itself, to its past, present and future. Europe and the whole wide world were additional focal-point themes meant to bring out this city’s openness and open-mindedness.
Projects were debuting as early as 2006. Over the course of the 365 days of the Capital of Culture year, there unfolded a program that was jam-packed with a dazzling array of cultural offerings. The lineup featured productions designed to appeal to the most artistically demanding audiences, yet never lost sight of the fact that a Capital of Culture is a feast for all, and the banquet table must feature place-settings for a wide variety of tastes.
