PIXEL HOTEL – The Whole City of Linz is a Hotel!
Press Conference
Monday, 10 November 2008, 10.30 a.m
Textilpassage, Graben 3, Linz
A Pixelhotel invites its guests to spend their stay in Linz in unique fashion—amp;in a highly unconventional sort of hotel. The individual rooms and suites are dispersed throughout the city. Here, a room is located in what used to be a store; there, one’s set in a workshop on a courtyard off the street. All about town, there are interesting but unused spaces that are being converted into hotel rooms in conjunction with this urban development and architecture project. One is in the middle of a residential neighborhood; another’s downtown; there’s even one in an industrial and working-class section of Linz. All parts of town have a story to tell; Pixelhotel’s guests enjoy an up-close-and-personal encounter with city life.
A pixel is the smallest possible hotel unit. It offers the comfort of a hotel room with double bed, living room, bathroom, minibar, internet access, TV and daily maid service. When it comes time for breakfast, though, guests have to leave the premises and head for a café conveniently located nearby. For their other culinary needs as well, they are called upon to take city map and public transit pass in hand and experience what this town has to offer—amp;to make Linz’s colorful restaurants their hotel dining room and local pubs their lobby bar.
The Pixelhotel project is being produced under the auspices of Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture. Two pixels opened for business in Fall 2007—amp;one on Marienstraße downtown, the other on Wimhölzel Square in the Franckviertel neighborhood. Both were individually designed and retain traces of how the premises were previously employed.
Over the course of 2008, four more Pixelhotel locations are opening. Guests can make room reservations online at www.pixelhotel.at or by calling +43 (0)650 7437953. Arriving guests are received by a member of the staff, who turns over their room key and gives them a briefing about their pixel.
The originators of the Pixelhotel concept are Sabine Funk, Michael Grugl, Jürgen Haller, Christian H. Leeb, Richard Steger and Christoph Weidinger
