Humankind has been singing since time immemorial. Songs with narratives. Songs about emotions. This spring’s “Festival 4020. More than Music” is entitled “Song.” The centerpiece: the human voice with all of its manifold facets and expressive possibilities.
The festival will feature music with a story to tell—the interweaving of text and melody and the dovetailing of many different varieties of literary content with the entire musical spectrum. This is the substantive basis of the festival’s excursion through the centuries. Among the milestones: vocal artistry of the Renaissance, modern approaches to the lied à la Franz Schubert, and the latest, most radical forms of vocal improvisation.Festival 4020.
