10+: Parallel

Övül and Mustafa Avkiran (10+ Company) are among the most outstanding representatives of the new Turkish theatre and performance scene and play a pioneering role in a development that focuses on socially aware and politically engaged contemporary drama.

 

Övül Avkiran is an exceptional choreographer, director and performer, Mustafa Avkiran a well-known director and actor. Together they are the founders and artistic directors of garajistanbul, a seedbed of innovative performance. Their work is being shown at major festivals all over the world.

 

Parallel is a project inspired by an intensive dialogue with the city of Linz and its inhabitants that 10+ have developed especially for Linz09. It is a performance featuring Övül and Mustafa Avkiran together with an ensemble of Linzers from a migrant background that focuses on the experiences of these women arising from the parallel lives they lead respectively with friends, colleagues and neighbours.

 

The decision to work with a group of women based in Linz takes into account the key role that these women play within the immigrant community in regard to integration and generational and cultural differences.

 

Parallel attempts to give an inside view of these parallel societies and to present it with the means of 10+, i.e. as a performance. The point is not to provide answers but to initiate questions. Parallel is TheatRE meant to be the first phase of a long-term archaeological project that proposes to analyze the many layers of religion, language, culture and barriers and that will continue beyond Linz09.
