Academy of the Impossible 2009
Copyright: Linz09
Following the successful 2008 workshops, the ACADEMY OF THE IMPOSSIBLE invited a new lineup of artists to design a colorful array of courses to enable people to explore and expand their own personal boundaries. There was movement, arts & crafts, drumming, theatrics and musicianship. All that participants had to bring with them was curiosity and enthusiasm to acquire new skills.
The Academy’s faculty members were artists—some Austrians, some from all over the world—who have a knack for making the impossible happen. Each course was oriented on the instructor’s particular area of expertise or special interest, and dealt with a wide array of facets of everyday life. The 22 workshops offered in summer 2009 were divided into two types: “do it all” cumulative courses lasting several days, and “mix & match” sessions that lasted anywhere from an hour to a whole day. The workshops were either totally free or a minimal tuition was charged in order to make the offerings available to as many people as possible.
Once again in 2009, more than 1,000 participants from the Linz metropolitan area, throughout Austria and from foreign countries took part in the ACADEMY OF THE IMPOSSIBLE’s colorful program. This project’s mission—combining professionalism and passion—proved to be a big hit. The many presentations and concerts attracted a big turnout, including numerous relatives and acquaintances of the participants.
Particular mention should be made of the theater workshops held during the time between the two summer sessions. One was the very successful program held in the Asten Penitentiary near Linz. These workshops enabled convicts to come to a new way of seeing their own (artistic) identity as well as the social and cultural environment in which they live. There was also a very intensive program of pedagogical instruction throughout the school year that offered practical experience for kindergarten teachers in training at BAKIP Linz.
