Akustikon - World of Hearing
Part of Hörstadt / Acoustic City

European Research and Education Center for the Sustainable Development of Acoustic Space
The Akustikon is the headquarters of ACOUSTIC CITY as well as the project’s culmination. Just a stone’s throw from Linz’s Main Square, the Akustikon is a domain conducive to sensorially pleasurable and insightful hearing. In the small but efficiently arranged 300m2 space, visitors experience the sounds of the planets in the universe, the noises of the city, auditory illusions and the most diverse acoustic effects - an incredible audio adventure for young and old alike. The audio experiences are provided by two Polyphons that hold, similar to an old apothecary cupboard, a sound in each drawer, by ear trumpets that lead from the city into the Akustikon, and audio stations called Auditons. In designing the Akustikon, a conscious decision was made to dispense with media, and thus with the depiction of sounds and other effects. There are no headphones so that the ears can remain unencumbered.
