In the late Middle Ages, the Salzstadl served as a place to store salt. The Donauschule, a Linz artists’ association, and its mentor Paul Fischnaller have filled it with cultural life. They put a great deal of effort into restoring part of the Salzamt building over the last few years and thus made an excellent start to revitalizing the whole facility.
The City of Linz followed their lead and purchased the building to ensure its long-term use as a cultural venue. The studios are available to artists from around the world as well as from the region to serve as their base and to furnish space for their creative work. In order to optimally engender synergies, SALZSTADL fosters collaboration among guests, whereby the focus in 2009 was on urban spaces. Artists get opportunities to make public presentations and stage exhibitions; grants-in-aid are also available. SALZSTADL is also making a concerted, long-term effort to promote international cultural exchange with European partners cities.
