Flemish theatre director Luk Perceval is in constant demand from Europe's leading theatres and festivals. Over the last two years, however, he has repeatedly taken time out to complete a personal project for Linz09. This is not a stage play. It is a film, a fictionalized investigation into the very real stories lurking in the tunnels below Linz.
Beneath the surface of the city Hitler wanted to turn into his cultural capital, the film feels its way through the darkness of the 14km underground network excavated by inmates of the Mauthausen concentration camp and asks: How could something so horrible remain unnoticed for so long? Is it really possible to forget something like this? THE CONCEALED CITY pieces together clues to the memories that lie in what remains of this city underneath the city, and brings them out into the open in a series of outdoor screenings. These will be held near the entrance to the Limoni cellars, a site which is itself a memorial of the Nazi period.
