In the Harbor of Longing
Longing is a universal feeling. We long for the past or the future; we yearn for persons, moments, smells. Longing can be for anything; what satisfies it can be just as diverse.
Most people still don’t realize that 115 languages are spoken in Linz, and that about 25% of the city’s population originally come from another country. Many of these men and women are members of associations and communities, celebrate festivals as a group, preserve traditions and customs, carry on their respective cultures—and do so without the vast majority of their fellow citydwellers being aware of that fact. This is why Linz09 invited these communities to open up their festivals to outsiders so that all could celebrate together. On four evenings, a wide array of cultures convened in Hafenhalle09. The program included music and dance performances, concerts, political panel discussions about two film screenings, a reading, and even a work of marionette theater. Each of the events concluded with a buffet featuring ethnic food & beverage specialties and a party. Attendance at the “In the Harbor of Longing for…” events totaled 1,300.
