Civil wars

Civil wars have been fought in many parts of Europe. Their legacies have been long-lasting and deep-seated in the societies in which they raged. The conflicts that gave rise to them in the first place are often still present and often still being fought out with other means and forms of expression. At the suggestion of a group of young historians from Vienna and Linz, various events dealing with this issue were staged in Spring 2009 at several locations in Linz and Steyr. Scholars and experts from Spain, Italy, Germany, Serbia and Bosnia gave speeches and reports about their experiences with the various strategies of dealing with or repressing the historical events of the civil wars in the respective countries. Film screenings and readings complemented the program. At the focal point of the discussion was the question of how, following the end of hostilities, the former parties to these conflicts went about dealing with what had happened, and what influences the conflicts had—or continue to have—on social and political life in the respective countries.
