In 1989 the United Nations passed the Convention on the Rights of the Child; 20 years later, this convention has indeed been ratified by Austria but it has not yet been anchored in the constitution. Changing this was one of the demands of demonstrators in the KIDSPARADE. Thousands of youngsters and grownups made themselves heard as they marched down Landstraße to raise awareness of the urgency of this matter. Kicking things off was a family fest with workshops and games that got everybody in the right frame of mind. Even before the big event, girls and boys had already been actively learning about children’s rights. Here, the focus was on the arts and culture: What do arts and culture have to offer children? Where can they be found? What do children expect from art, and how can they take part in cultural life?
This very unique rally was designed to be a platform custom-tailored to young people, a way for young Europe to speak up for its rights, loudly, cheerfully and with many voices, and for Linz to stake its claim to also being the European Capital of Children’s Rights! The KIDSPARADE, held for the eighth time in 2009, was initiated by the Festival for Children’s Rights Association and the Kinderfreunde Oberösterreich child welfare league.
