He’s a drummer, composer, singer, poet and thinker who displays creative power and dynamic, compelling artistic energy. Doug Hammond is a living legend. Born in Tampa, Florida in 1942, Hammond has resided in Linz since 1989. Over the years, he’s collaborated on jazz projects with the likes of Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Dave Holland and Steve Coleman. Composing New Music has become an especially important part of his creative efforts. With his combination of traditional and contemporary compositional styles, Doug Hammond has made an essential contribution to the development of jazz as contemporary music has expanded in a variety of new directions and made connections to old music, ethnic musical forms and youth culture. Black American music with African and Indian roots has shaped Doug Hammond’s life work. This broad musical spectrum is ultimately what enables him to carry on an intercultural dialog. Now, “Roots & New Dreams” spotlights Doug Hammond in his role as composer. He and a lineup of first-class sidemen played several venues in Linz and vicinity.
