Toulouse -Lautrec : An Intimate Look
Copyright: Kunsthalle Bremen
The European Capital of Culture program included a high-profile homage to Paris, the city that was once Europe’s premier capital of culture.
“Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The Intimate Look at Human Existence” was a Landesgalerie Linz exclusive. Pictures on loan from the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, France and other institutions provided an intimate view of Parisian nightlife that the artist (1864-1901) recorded and commented on in an unvarnished but highly empathetic way in drawings and oil paintings as well as in the popular medium of the poster.
The show highlighted an important facet of his work that had previously been accorded scant consideration: his precise renderings of modern human forms and countenances at the nexus of public and private spheres. The images included preliminary sketches, private portraits and drawings. The exhibit was divided into several separate spaces dedicated to, respectively, aristocratic country life, family and friends, and life in the big city with its women and pleasures.
Attendance at this extraordinary exhibition exceeded 63,800. The book-format catalog includes 90 illustrations. The accompanying program of events, guided tours and workshops offered additional information about and interpretive insights into the artist and his works.
