Margit Schreiner has blended the complex business of writing with the drama of survival. “The Woman” in her play lives in a world of hi-tech upon which she is utterly dependent. Meanwhile her subconscious spews forth demons from the past which pursue her even into her dreams. She gets a respite only in her massage chair, the Cumulus, where she is kneaded and worked over until she is able to watch her life pass by.
A line from the play: “A writer has to be like his readers, then he doesn’t need to invent any problems.” And there are so many problems, it’s impossible to count them all. They include almost everything except murder: writer’s block and a new apartment, the newspaper’s arts section and childrearing, slipped discs and traumatic religious experiences, the significance of the musical training received by Mozart and Bach with specific reference to its music therapy aspects, and the pleasures and burdens of memory. This is a cross section of life as it’s lived by real people—chaotic indeed, but never devoid of a modicum of coherence and internal order.
