Cultural history in the Capital of Culture. This was the theme of the second conclave of historians and scholars in cultural studies and the social sciences that convened at the University of Linz’s Department of Contemporary History and Modern History. The program was as varied as this scholarly field itself. In addition to a discussion of current projects, there were intensive encounters with state-of-the-art methods and theoretical approaches to politics, the economy, society and subjectivity. Participants also took a close look at the Capital of Culture project, whereby the focus was on European cultural policymaking and, above all, its implementation on national and local levels. Here, perhaps the most perplexing and, at the same time, pressing question is how to successfully coordinate the various legitimate interests of artists, art managers and politicians with European, national and local objectives.
