Linz liest Vilnius / Linz Reads Vilnius
Copyright: Arunas Baltenas
Lithuania and its literature were the theme of a series of events featuring contemporary writers from the Baltic republic. The first evening featured a lyrical tour of multicultural Vilnius in the company of Tomas Venclova, a Lithuanian poet and essayist of international renown who is currently teaching at Yale. Arūnas Balténas then showed photographs of the historic old city of Vilnius, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
The second evening featured two representatives of Lithuania’s younger generation of writers, Giedra Radvilaviciūté and Sigitas Parulskis. They were joined on stage by Upper Austrian author Walter Pilar, who had already begun cultivating ties to Lithuania in the 1990s. VILNIUS READS LINZ was moderated by Cornelius Hell, who also contributed a multimedia portrait of Lithuania complete with an introduction to its literature. In attendance were Lithuania’s ambassador to Austria as well as its cultural attaché in Vienna. This was a lively exchange of ideas and experiences accompanied by Lithuanian food and drink.
