A temporary structure erected over a freeway offered new perspectives of Linz.
BELLEVUE – Beautiful View, a facility perched above the Mühlkreis autobahn, was constructed amidst an idyllic landscaped park newly created in 2005. On one side, cars constantly whizzing down the freeway that disappears beneath ones feet; on the other, the greenery of the park. The monochrome yellow structure enwraps a setting offering housing quarters for guest artists, an info kiosk, a cafeteria with terrace, bicycle rentals, workspace, an exhibition space, a media room, a library, and a public stage. Daily events turned BELLEVUE into a hub of artistic interaction that invited neighbors, passers-by and other interested parties to cook, dance, play music, do gardening, write, produce, document, hear and see. A temporary landmark that facilitated both the spectacular and the commonplace.
Three months long, Bellevue bundled powers, synergies and passions. The facility’s very diverse daily program, the free workshops, concerts, the canteen with a rotating crew of chefs, the movie & talk show evenings, the high-turnover project staff ever ready for a chat, and the very fact that Bellevue was a very inviting setting to hang out made it a magnet for locals and people from all over Linz as well as Capital of Culture visitors—a total of 33,000 of them. Furthermore, there was tremendous interest on the part of German and Viennese guests, many of them experts in the fields of neighborhood culture, city planning and urbanism, all delighted by Bellevue’s high degree of innovation and interaction.
