Wiener Geschenk / A Viennese Gift
Copyright: Terry Linke
The federal capital’s view to the provinces was dominated by Linz in 2009. Other cities just laid low and waited it out, but Vienna displayed magnanimity, showed it was happy for Linz, and extended congratulations. And also sent a gift to the Capital of Culture and its guests. On Austria's National Holiday, of course. And, needless to say, in the form of a featured guest worthy of a Capital of Culture. One of the world’s great orchestras, a musical ensemble of international renown and Austria's foremost cultural ambassador, came to the Brucknerhaus. The Vienna Philharmonic under conductor Georges Prêtre performed Franz Schubert’s 2nd Symphony and Richard Strauss’ “Ein Heldenleben,” two grandiose works of musical genius that, like the gift itself, truly came from the heart. The City of Vienna and its Philharmonic thus honored a year worthy of being celebrated in style. The ORF – Austrian Broadcasting Company’s National Holiday programming included extensive reportage from Europe’s 2009 Capital of Culture.
