The Visualized Klangwolke (cloud of sound) staged annually at Linz’s riverside Donaupark has enjoyed unwavering popularity ever since its founding in 1979. It’s one of the highpoints of the cultural calendar; attendance is regularly in the 100,000 range. In 2009, Linz was deluged, as the Klangwolke followed the current back to one of humankind’s oldest tales. Torrents of water, floods of information, waves of human beings. During the time leading up to this inundation, visible and audible warnings of what was to come were impossible to ignore. Serious and absurd prophesies collided head-on. During the day of the big event, 500 wondrous creatures designed by artist Roger Titley overran the city, captivating onlookers and pulling the crowd along in their wake. 25,000 Klangwolke fans followed the fabulous beasts along several routes through town. At nightfall, scenery erected in front of the Brucknerhaus was the setting for an incredibly imaginative spectacle. Conceived and produced by Arian Berg and Martina Winkel, an impressive array of images depicted the ancient theme of The Flood, the end of the world and the ark that rescued some. More than 80,000 guests in Donaupark heard Dick van der Harst’s music and watched the spectacle of the animals.
