LINZFEST, a Whitsun weekend fixture for 20 years now, presents a lively, colorful lineup of international and regional music, literature, cabaret and exhibitions. The 2009 festival is being produced jointly by Linz Kultur and Linz09. Admission is free of charge.
This year, past, present and future Capitals of Culture have been invited to take part in an artistic showcase. The featured cities are Liverpool/UK and Stavanger/NOR (2008), Linz/AUT and Vilnius/LIT (2009), Essen/D, Pécs/HU and Istanbul/TUR (2010), Tallinn/EST and Turku/FIN (2011), Maribor/SLO and Guimaraes/POR (2012) as well as Kosice/SK and Marseille/FR (2013). Approximately 100 musicians, cabaret performers, actors and literati will represent their respective city and present their artistry on stages erected in a lovely park setting on the banks of the Danube between the Lentos Art Museum and the Brucknerhaus concert hall. Headliners include Jan Delay, Mogwai and Turkish hiphop superstar Ceza. Rounding out the jam-packed program are projects large and small. Experience extraordinary entertainment from other Capitals of Culture—for instance, stand-up comedy from Liverpool and a musical park bench from Stavanger.
Plus, we’ve invited master chefs from all over Europe to prepare their distinctive regional culinary specialties. The grand finale is the Culture Picnic and Kids’ Festival on Monday. Nightline fun will be happening at two of Linz’s hippest cultural facilities: the Sky Loft in the Ars Electronica Center and the Stadtwerkstatt.
The YES09 Youth European Soccer Cup competition among football teams representing European Capitals of Culture will also be held during the LINZFEST09 weekend.
