Theatre Mania1: Snowstorm – Hell on Earth
Press Release
Friday, 23 January 2009
This weekend (January 24 & 25), the international theatre and dance festival THEATRE MANIA 1: SNOWSTORM presents HELL ON EARTH, a terpsichorean encounter by young people with issues revolving around migration and integration. Next week begins with two Austrian premieres: ESCALE TRIE COLORE on Monday, January 26, 2009 and THE REAL FICTION on Tuesday, January 27, 2009.
This sharp, street-wise, high-energy show was created by choreographer Constanza Macras with a group of teenagers from Neukölln, a Berlin neighborhood with 150,000 inhabitants from over 160 countries.
How do adolescents with an immigrant background cope with their sense of foreignness? How do interactions of highly divergent conceptions of femininity and masculinity, of physicality and gender, get played out? HELL ON EARTH reports from these young people’s own perspectives about hopes and difficulties, about the migration experience and the discrimination they encounter a daily basis, and tells of their desire to assimilate and the difficulties this brings.
HELL ON EARTH deals with the turbulent reality of growing up under difficult conditions. The results are lively, moving and often very funny.
The performance on Sunday, January 25, 2009 will be translated into sign language for the deaf. Afterwards, there’ll be an audience Q&A session.
Two more Austrian premieres will take place next week. On Monday, January 26, 2009, Senegalese choreographer Audréya Ouamba presents her tripartite dance program entitled ESCALE TRIE COLORE. The three pieces, Design, Impro-Visé_2 and Contre Poids, approach major political issues on a small scale and explore them in a subtle yet eloquent way.
On Tuesday, January 27, 2009, theatregoers will be treated to the Austrian debut of THE REAL FICTION, an evening full of surprises staged by Spanish director Cuqui Jerez. This project is an investigation of the concept of truth. The audience’s powers of imagination will be dispatched on a thrilling journey over the course of the evening. Surreal theatre in its most humorous form!
