Imagining a “world in our heads” is somethin that simply must become part of our response to everyday culture if we want to achieve any kind of individuality. A carefully cultivated aesthetic intelligence is required for the development of a creative life – merely trying to keep up with the dictates of assorted hyped lifestyles will never get us anywhere.
A true individualist must be obsessed with freedom; this obsession carries with it a subversive potential: our own imagination must be capable of creating a “parallel world”. The late 18th century, which saw a pre-disciplinary knowledge society flourish, abounds with examples of this. Theory then was not “grey and here” and life was not yet “green and there”. The rational faculty of the mind was capable of passion and its reflexive powers honed affects and emotions to the keenness of blades.
We need this faculty in Linz. It takes an unruly imagination to lend aplomb to our awareness of ourselves and to make us socially compatible. Questions about Linz’s urban character arise once more as questions about the “cultural memory” of the city and its inhabitants. Issues such as these feature in our “opera of knowledge” by means of performative culture mediation and are “displayed” in a setting shaped by art and everyday culture.
The term “imaginative rhetoric” refers to the interdisciplinary cultural technique needed to create “knowledge spaces” and to use them as “stages” for mediation. This is designed to generate interest in a new research regime that is trying to understand the relationship of science and art in dynamic terms. The “development of artistic-scientific competence” – this is the legally mandated aim of Austria’s universities of art. For this purpose “Welt im Kopf – die neue Lust am Speculieren” is a “lab for the formulation of new hypotheses” for the humanities and at the same time the first “experimental stage” for the new PhD/doctorate course “Staging Knowledge” at the University of Arts Linz, which will be able to tap into an international network.
The exhibition will feature a wealth of objects and multimedia cultural mediation and is equally suited for families, for Linzers from all walks of life and for international experts of all standards.
