to the Press Release Issued on April 14, 2008 by the Offenes Forum Freie Szene Linz

The statement laying out the indie scene’s position on the current cultural policymaking situation in Linz makes it clear that preparations for the Capital of Culture year are raising the level of emotional explosiveness of these confrontations with cultural policymaking issues.

Nothing less than astounding is the view that Linz09 holds the indie scene in low regard. The facts tell a very different story:
The lion’s share of Linz09’s program budget of € 40.5 is committed to cultural facilities of the City of Linz and the Province of Upper Austria.

As for the proportion of the entire program budget that will be subsidizing projects by members of the indie scene and free-lance artists in Linz and Upper Austria: the subsidies approved for these projects and the development costs attributable to them come to a total of € 9.9 million, which represents about 25% of Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture’s total program budget.

And among the initiatives that signed the statement dated April 14th are organizations that will be the recipients of € 3.1 million in funding to produce projects for the Linz09 program.
