The actb – Austrian and Central European Travel Business, Austria's largest tourism trade fair, was held at Vienna’s Messe Wien expo center on January 28-29. Linz, Europe’s 2009 Capital of Culture, was right in the middle of the action once again.Along with 338 other exhibitors, Linz’s representatives presented the 2009 Capital of Culture lineup to 852 wholesale buyers (tour operators and travel agencies, transportation providers like airlines, railways and bus companies that also offer packages, associations/clubs that arrange group activities, etc.) from 58 countries.
Österreich Werbung, Austria's national tourism agency, showcased the 2009 Capital of Culture at the opening press conference. Ulrich Fuchs, Linz09’s deputy artistic director and head of project development, was invited to preview highlights of next year's Capital of Culture program and to run down Linz’s many attractions before an audience of 173 journalists from 40 countries. The bottom line: “Linz, heretofore a favorite of business travelers, conventioneers, Danube excursion boat passengers and touring cyclists, is now also seeking to sustainably position itself as an attractive destination for classical metropolitan/cultural tourists.”
The bit hit at the trade fair booth itself was the Linz09 Café, where master pastry chef Leo Jindrak did a live show creating genuine Linzer Augen and Harry Fischer, Austria's espresso barman of the year, served up a perfectly prepared coffee accompaniment for countless guests.
