The six had been among more than 50—predominantly female—participants in a literary workshop held under the aegis of “UmLinzRum” in October 2007 in Sibiu, Romania.
Directed by Viennese literary scholar and author Oskar Terš, the workshop was designed to encourage fledgling writers in developing works in German. The poems and short stories dealt primarily with the relationship between two capitals of culture, Sibiu and Linz.
Romanian musical accompaniment was provided by the Adrian Gaspar GypsyCombo featuring Adrian Gaspar (accordion), Branko Jovanovic (guitar) and Manuel Mayr (double bass).
Following the reading, Romanian literature—still male-dominated turf—was the subject of a discussion by Cãtãlina Ene (author), Ulrich Fuchs (deputy artistic director of Linz09), Oskar Terš (workshop director) and author Richard Schuberth (noted Eastern Europe expert).
Linz09 successfully launched “UmLinzRum,” Oskar Terš’ series of literature workshops, in the StifterHaus in February 2007. The first installment featured four participants from Budweis, The Czech Republic.
Cãtãlina Ene is one of Romania’s most talented young authors. She’s been publishing poetry and essays since 1998. Her work masterfully blends and reconfigures the arts and thereby creates a new approach to grasping culture.
Oskar Terš was an instructor of German language and literature at the Universities of Tuzla and Bihac 2002-05. In 2004, he edited (together with Juli Zeh and David Finck) an anthology entitled “Ein Hund läuft durch die Republik. Geschichten aus Bosnien” (A Dog Runs through the Republic. Stories from Bosnia). Since 2005, he’s been holding writing & theater workshops and discovering new German linguistic enclaves, above all in Eastern Europe.
