A project for Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture in cooperation with StifterHaus
Readings interspersed with musical intermezzi plus culinary and “beer-friendly” delicacies bring Lithuania’s culture of everyday life to Linz. There’ll also be screenings of film excerpts and book presentations—including the 2/09 issue of “Die Rampe” that features Lithuania.
Lithuania and literature make up the theme of this series of events showcasing contemporary writers from the Baltic republic. Leading off the lineup is Tomas Venclova with a historical survey of multicultural Vilnius. The internationally renowned poet and essayist teaches at Yale University.
The second evening presents two members of Lithuania’s young generation of writers, Giedra Radvilaviciūté and Sigitas Parulskis. Joining them on the dais will be Upper Austrian author Walter Pilar, who first visited Lithuania even before it gained independence in 1991. Linz author Eugenie Kain recently traveled to the Lithuanian capital and read from her work at the Vilnius International Book Fair.
LINZ READS VILNIUS will be moderated by Cornelius Hell, who will provide a multimedial portrait of Lithuania as well as a literary introduction.
