Free Networks. Free Knowledge
A book just published by two Linz authors deals with the social manifestations of the open source movement.
Free, democratic access to knowledge and digital communities whose networks are freely accessible—the discussion of topics having to do with open source and open access is proliferating worldwide.Leonhard Dobusch and Christian Forsterleitner, the publishers of “Freie Netze. Freies Wissen” (Free Networks. Free Knowledge) provide answers. The Linz duo and their co-authors have conducted a host of interviews and initiated a critical encounter with experts and pioneers in the field of open source.
The conclusion of each of the book’s chapters is a concrete project proposal for implementation on the local level as a contribution to the 2009 Capital of Culture year.
In his foreword, Artistic Director Martin Heller emphasizes the importance of current policymaking initiatives to promote socialization with respect to media and issues a call for bold experimentation and readiness to take some risks in 2009, since both are indispensable to the process of bringing about real breakthroughs.
