Going for a walkabout in Linz – with your ears wide open
Copyright: Pondell
The great “Hörstadt” initiative makes it possible for you to explore Linz’s urban space – with your ears. The programme includes regular guided tours and leisurely strolls featuring some of the city’s most remarkable acoustic hotspots.
The oases of quiet at Centralkino and St Mary’s, the Akustikon in Pfarrgasse, the bugle calls from the spire of Stadtpfarrkirche, echoing interior courtyards and thoroughfares in the old part of the city – these and other acoustically remarkable spots in the heart of Linz feature in the weekly “Hörstadt” guided tours. The Swiss composer, musician and sound architect Andres Bosshard has set out to identify the properties of soundscapes that are characteristic of Linz. He has discovered 25 “Hörenswürdigkeiten” or acoustic hotspots. Located in some cases where you would least expect them, they’re places characterised by intriguing echoes, rich sonic textures and/or sounds of nature: a plane tree on Schlossberg, the echoing space below Nibelungenbrücke or a meadow in solarCity. Andres Bosshard himself will be there to guide small groups of people who want to know more about Linz’s “Hörenswürdigkeiten”. The Hörstadt Map (available free of charge from info@hoerstadt.at) provides orientation to those who prefer to explore the acoustic space of Linz on their own.
