Young Footballers are Kicking Off in Linz!
Over the coming weekend, Linz will be in the thralls of football fever! Athletes age 15 and under from all over Europe are coming to town for the YES09 Youth European Soccer Cup.
The young footballers who’ll be facing off this weekend represent past, present and future capitals of culture and Linz’s sister cities. Teams from Albufeira, Essen, Kosice, Maribor, Passau, Pécs, Tallinn, Tel Aviv and Vilnius will first get acquainted on May 29 at a gala welcome event at the Lentos Art Museum downtown. And, of course, a side of Linz all-stars will also be taking the field. The patron of this celebration of sportsmanship is Austrian football star Ivica Vastic. The action gets underway on May 30 at 10 AM at ABC ASKÖ (Hölderlinstr. 36). Presiding over the ceremonial kickoff will be a prominent guest: Willi Lemke, former manager of Werder Bremen and Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace. The YES09 competition will continue for three days at three different athletic venues in Linz. For scheduling details, log on to www.yes09.at.
YES09 will be reprised next year as Pécs10 in Hungary’s 2010 European Capital of Culture.
