Loneliness, fear and the consequences of an obsession with power are the themes of Franz Hummel’s opera “Fouché.” This work commissioned by Linz09 premieres on January 9th.
His absolute mastery of the art of intrigue made possible Joseph Fouché’s ascent from monk and seminary instructor to Napoleon’s minister of police, and paved his way to intellectual mass murderer and inventor of state surveillance on a mass scale. Nevertheless, the incredibly tangled webs he wove were ultimately his undoing, and he died in exile in 1820. Half-heartedly tolerated by Metternich, he found refuge in Linz.Fouché, the exile tormented by his past, is the chief protagonist of the eponymous opera by Franz Hummel, world-famous as one of Europe’s most original composers. “Fouché” is his latest work. It premieres on January 9, 2009 before a sold-out house in Linz’s Posthof. There are still a few tickets available for subsequent performances; for additional information, click here.
