“Coming and Going” is a project by Linz09 and Social Impact that’s making a high-profile statement on 18 city limits signs along major thoroughfares in and out of Linz: they’re being augmented with the word “Linz” spelled out in all the alphabets used in this city.
The new signage not only exemplifies the diversity of cultures in Linz; it’s also a symbol of respect for the migrants living among us, men and women whose presence enriches the atmosphere of Linz and makes it a true Capital of Culture. Now, signs arrayed along the city’s 18 highest-volume arteries are welcoming and bidding farewell to locals and visitors alike in languages such as Chinese, Sinhalese, Greek, Armenian and Cherokee.“Coming and Going” is planning further campaigns for 2009. There’ll be a photography contest with prizes for the most original photos featuring the multilingual city limits signs. Between April and June, “Coming and Going” will be honoring vehicles—cars, bicycles, etc.—adorned with a city limits sign sticker bearing one of the 36 alphabets. Beginning in Spring 2009, postcards featuring all 36 signs will be available online at www.kommenundgehen.at. They can be mailed digitally or as a hard copy.
