First Insights into EXTRA EUROPA
Copyright: Linz09
Another project by Linz09 was presented this week at a press conference in Vienna. In 2009 EXTRA EUROPA will focus on Europe outside the European Union.
Norway, Switzerland and Turkey could hardly be more different if they tried. However, they have one significant feature in common: even though in strictly geographical terms they are all part of Europe, none of them belongs to the EU. There are different reasons for this state of affairs.Just as you may sometimes find out most easily about what is close to you by refocusing temporarily on what is faraway, these three countries may stimulate the discussion in EXTRA EUROPE on what we actually mean when we refer to a “European identity”, and on the self-perception of the EU.
At the EXTRA EUROPA Symposium (19 – 21 March 2009) experts from Norway, Switzerland and Turkey will attempt to shed light on such issues as the “European idea”, the different rationales behind their non-membership and on new aspects of the Union. The EXTRA EUROPA Festival (19 March – 2 May 2009) will provide a platform for the EXTRA EUROPA countries to present themselves in 60 or so different programmes drawn from the fields of dance, theatre, music, literature, cartoons and the visual arts.
