Linz’s Wissensturm is Open
The newly-opened Wissensturm conveniently located near Linz’s main train station provides an updated setting for three knowledge-oriented institutions: the Stadtbibliothek (municipal library), the Volkshochschule (adult continuing education center) and the Medienwerkstatt (media workshop).
The Wissensturm’s mission is to facilitate access to education. The 15 stories of this 63-meter-tall “knowledge tower” provide a total of 15,400 m2 of space. The Volkshochschule now features 22 seminar rooms in which to offer its curriculum of approximately 1,100 courses. The holdings of the Stadtbibliothek include 70,000 books, 35,000 electronic media and a children’s library. In the Wissensturm’s lobby, current newspapers and journals as well as magazines from Austria and many other countries are available. In addition to courses and reading matter, the newly-opened Wissensturm also offers spectacular views and some very useful infrastructure: a City of Linz Citizens’ Service Bureau, an event venue for up to 200 guests, a multi-purpose exhibition space and a restaurant. Plus, the entire Wissensturm is a hotspot (WLAN) zone.
