Revisit: Linz Franckviertel
07.03.2007The so-called Franckviertel, a Linz neighbourhood beset by a number of structural problems, is the subject of an exhibition being staged in cooperation with Linz09 at afo architekturforum oberösterreich.
Life in Franckviertel – Is Franckviertel beautiful?Peter Arlt in collaboration with Art University Linz and MUF London
There’s no such thing as Linz! Just like every other city, Linz too is the sum of its diverse neighborhoods, each with its own individual personality and charm. The Franckviertel section of town is still the target of negative ascriptions from external sources. It’s close to downtown and yet cut off from the city by an expressway, industry, a railroad embankment and symbolic boundaries. The quarter’s demographic mix displays a high concentration of ethnic minorities and low-income groups. Numerous urban planning projects have been carried out here in recent decades: Lonstorfer Square was radically redesigned and the Volkshaus was renovated. But the big picture is characterized by the increasing dilapidation of old apartment buildings and public spaces.
In “Revisit: Linz Franckviertel,” a group of architecture students from Linz Art University (advisor: Richard Steger and MUF London) will take up the case of Franckviertel and try to get to the bottom of things. What does the public sphere look like and why? Who uses it? Who nurtures it? What might be promising approaches for ways to take better advantage of vacant spaces? What can be learned from Franckviertel?
The insights gained in this way will be put on display and up for discussion at an exhibition—at architekturforum Upper Austria first and then in Franckviertel itself.
