The feast day of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, is November 22nd. The day before, we’ll be doing something special to make people cognizant of music and its role in our lives. On November 21st, Linz will be at the center of the worldwide observation of NO MUSIC DAY
In 2006, Scottish artist Bill Drummond launched NO MUSIC DAY as an occasion to voluntarily do without music in order to become more intensely aware of artistically arranged sounds and how they enrich human existence. By 2007, Drummond had already lined up the support of BBC Scotland, which completely dispenses with music—down to the last commercial jingle—throughout that day. In conjunction with the ACOUSTIC CITY initiative, Linz09 is making Europe’s 2009 Capital of Culture the focal point of worldwide NO MUSIC DAY activities. Lots of event producers, businesses, supermarkets, cafés, radio stations and private individuals are taking part.Bill Drummond will already be in town on November 19 for a chat with musician/music journalist Rainer Krispel in Wissensturm. The public is cordially invited. Following a set with DJ DSL (Hamburg/Vienna) at the OK Center for Contemporary Art on the evening of November 20, NO MUSIC DAY kicks off at the stroke of midnight. Moviemento Kino will be screening music-free films and Bill Drummond himself will cook soup. Then, NO MUSIC DAY will conclude at 12 Midnight just as it commenced 24 hours earlier: musically—this time with a set by DJ Michael Fakesch.
