Library of 100 Languages

Now that the Library of the Province of Upper Austria has moved back into its freshly renovated facility, the containers that served as its temporary home during the construction will be the setting for a very special collection of books and texts in Schiller Park. They’re highlighting the languages spoken by the many immigrants to the City of Linz.
Almost 25% of the Capital of Culture’s inhabitants are descendants of folks not originally from German-speaking Europe. These citydwellers have been invited to fill the LIBRARY OF 100 LANGUAGES with texts and books from their respective ethnic homeland. This “linguistic treasury” is meant to preserve the cultural roots that connect these people to their place of origin, but it also reflects current reading habits and provides insights into foreigners’ ways of life. This temporary library is bound to become a lively multicultural meeting place that will also host a lineup of events in which the accent is on young people. In cooperation with CULTURE PILOTS, the project is staging readings, discussions and book presentations, some of which will be broadcast by Radio FRO.
