The “Odd Jubilees” project doesn’t commemorate round-number historical anniversaries. It seeks to keep alive the memory of obscure and offbeat events that occurred here some uneven number of years ago. On July 19th, it’s time for the third installment.

In February, ski jumping was revived on Pöstlingberg and the story of Linz’s ominous Rohrwolf resurrected. In June, the dynamiting of a high-rise was belatedly celebrated and the construction in Linz of ocean-going vessels—no kidding!—was recalled. The third of four “Odd Jubilee” days has an interesting lineup on tap for July 19. In 1925, there was an airport right in the middle of downtown Linz: Seaplanes landed on the Danube after an 85-minute flight from Vienna. We’ll also learn about an Upper Austrian Robinson Crusoe, who set off from Linz and experienced hair-raising adventures. Exactly 109 years ago, Linz linguist Johann Puchner invented a new language named Nuove-Roman; “Odd Jubilees” will commemorate this historical achievement, as well as the day in February 1552 when an elephant ran through town.
