“80+1 – A Journey around the World” is a virtual excursion across the face of the Earth—establishing link-ups with locations worldwide, and jointly coming to grips with issues of critical importance to our planet and our future. The focal-point topics over the next two weeks include climate change and cultural diversity.

Of all the issues we face today, none is more pressing than climate change and its potentially dire consequences for humankind. In this spirit, the 80+1 Base Camp on Linz’s Main Square is launching a live remote hookup to researchers in Finland; in return, the midnight sun in Europe’s Great White North will be reflected onto the façade of the Ars Electronica Center. Inhabitants of a town in Argentina are singing lullabies that will be transmitted to Linz on July 23rd and 25th, which is, of course, an excellent opportunity for folks in these parts to send some of their own vocal stylings back across the water!
Linz will be connected to the big wide world on a daily basis until September 4. 80+1 then culminates on September 5 with a global conference that will be one of the highlights of the 2009 Ars Electronica Festival (September 3-8). Human Nature is this year's festival theme. Biotechnology, the life sciences and drawing the boundary between nature and culture will be discussed in symposia and treated in numerous installations, interventions and performances.
