The opening of the Akustikon on Pfarrgasse is the next highlight to emerge from Linz09’s Acoustic City initiative designed to sensitize people to the world of sounds surrounding them. But this is by no means a museum; rather, it’s a setting for auditory adventure for young and old alike.

The Akustikon is dedicated exclusively to hearing; accordingly, it dispenses with illustrations and other visualization techniques and effects. There aren’t even headphones. Its sound installations—so-called Auditons—let users immediately experience the various physical laws of acoustics. The facility’s featured attractions are two Polyphones, large cabinets resembling pharmacist’s cupboards—every one of their hundreds of drawers stores its own individual sound. Virtually impossible to miss are the “ear trumpets” installed on Hauptplatz and Pfarrplatz to capture the urban soundscape and pipe it into the Akustikon, where these locally specific sounds can be experienced in a hearing chamber.
