Since 1993, the Festival of the Regions has been staged biennially at a different location in Upper Austria. On the occasion of Linz’s stint as Capital of Culture, the festival has selected a venue that’s a bit closer to the province’s capital than is usually the case. The 2009 theme, “Normalcy,” shifts the Auwiesen and solarCity neighborhoods on Linz’s south side into the focal point of attention.
Installations, exhibitions, interventions that deal with the specific character of a place, the culture of everyday life, art in public spaces—these are the elements that have come to define the Festival of the Regions’ signature approach. In collaboration with local partners, segments of Linz’s cultural scene will be doing guest shots in Auwiesen and solarCity beginning May 9. These two neighborhoods on the far southern edge of the metro area are by no means classical cultural venues, which is precisely why they’re able to impart their own unique imprint to this year's proceedings. “Gassi” (Walkies), for example, lets festivalgoers accompany a dog making its quotidian rounds through Auwiesen. solarCity locals who tune in to “home:entertainer” during TV-viewing primetime beginning at 8:15 PM get a real-life visit from the German artists’ group AKKU, who then proceed to put on a live performance right in the home audience’s living room. “Nomad City Passage” will be making the rounds in the form of a transient tent camp—thus, your big chance to spend the night in a building supply store, a hydroelectric plant or an indoor climbing facility!Festival of the Regions
