A genuine Austrian custom assumed its rightful place on the Capital of Culture’s opening program. On January 1st at 11 AM, it was time for some good old-fashioned Aperschnalzen.
The ”Altstädter Bauerngmoa“ staged a whip cracking demonstration on the revamped Promenade in front of the Landhaus. Aperschnalzen has its roots in an ancient ritual for driving back the snow – the word aper signifies free from snow. It is an integral part of Linz‘s folklore and has been performed here in its current form since 1925.
