Linz vs Vilnius: Lithuania notches up a first victory

In the first test of the respective mettle of the two European Capitals of Culture 2009 Linz was forced to concede defeat. In a World Cup qualifier Lithuania beat Austria 2:0. As we lick our wounds we find a certain consolation in the fact that this preliminary round does not count towards the final outcome of “Linz vs Vilnius“.

Inspired by the perennial primetime casting shows on TV, Messrs Juhann and Jod will host five evenings in 2009, each devoted to a different theme. They will determine which Capital of Culture is entitled to wear its head that little bit higher. Kickoff was on Wednesday, 10 September. The World Cup qualifier Austria vs Lithuania could be followed free of charge, together with Messrs Juhann and Jod’s commentary, at the Grand Cafe zum Rothen Krebsen.
Linzers are of course far from feeling discouraged by this defeat in the football stadium. They know that in the regular duels for the title of the true Capital of Culture 2009 the last word will be left not to a ball but to the audiences.
