Beyond the City Limits: Linz09 is Regional
The activities of next year's European Capital of Culture don’t abruptly stop at the edge of town! Linz09 encompasses the whole region and is getting lots of other Upper Austrian cities involved, both as project venues and as key tourism partners.
Several regions of the Province of Upper Austria are already a part of the Linz09 program. The same holds true for major cities here: Wels, Schärding, Gmunden and Traun will also be hosting productions during the Capital of Culture year.Media Culture House Wels will be the site of the “What you really need” project. “Landschaftsoper” (Landscape Opera) by Peter Ablinger will be staged in and around Ulrichsberg on the edge of the Bohemian Forest. And the list goes on: “Kulturbaden” (Swimming and Culture) in Ottensheim, for instance, and “Upper Austrian Monastery Concerts” in St. Florian.
In going about this, Linz09’s aim is to highlight the cultural, political and economic interrelationships between Linz and its surrounding region, to strengthen these ties and promote sustainable cooperation. Cultural projects as well as joint ventures with regional tourism associations are designed to accomplish just that.
