Literary Remembrances of Mauthausen
30.07.2008In September, the Capital of Culture will begin its focus on National Socialism with two exhibitions: “The Cultural Capital of the Führer” and “Political Sculpture.” Linz09 also recommends a literary event dealing with the Nazi past scheduled for early August.
The Mauthausen concentration camp was built in the immediate vicinity of Linz in 1938. Now, 70 years later, three Upper Austrian writers are commemorating the atrocities committed there. On August 8, 2008, Eugenie Kain , Elisabeth Reichart and Helmut Rizy will read from “ Aber wir haben nur Worte, Worte, Worte. Der Nachhall von Mauthausen in der Literatur” (But We Have Only Words, Words, Words. Mauthausen’s Lingering Echo in Literature). The reading’s venue is a historically significant place: the Cembran-Keller was a wine cellar that slave laborers from Linz II, one of Mauthausen’s satellite camps, converted into an air raid shelter in 1944-45. A tour through the system of tunnels will be offered prior to the reading.Friday, August 8, 2008, 7:30 PM
