Kopfstand09: Heterogeneous Islam
On June 24, Linz09’s KOPFSTAND discussion series will focus on a topic that so many people are mentioning, discussing and interpreting these days: Islam and its great diversity.
Although Islam now serves as an explanatory matrix for global events and processes of all sorts, few Austrians have detailed knowledge about its theology, culture and philosophy. The next installment of KOPFSTAND entitled “Heterogeneous Islam” on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 7 p.m. in transpublic will strive to clear up misunderstandings about this world religion. The event’s aim is to take a purely informative approach for once in shedding light on the subject of Islam. The discussion will go into historical events, the division between the Sunnis and the Shiites, the national and regional varieties of Islam, as well as the situation of Muslims in Austria in general and Linz in particular.Speakers will be Amina Baghajati, spokeswoman of the Islamic Community of Austria, and Moussa Al-Hassan of the Muslim Teachers Association. Serving as moderator is Nikola Ornig, author of the study “The Second Generation and Islam in Austria. An Analysis of the Opportunities and Limitations of Pluralism of Religions and Ethnic Groups.” Admission is free of charge.
