Linz09 Exhibitions Continue to Run
Anyone who’s been putting off seeing these fascinating exhibitions—or would like to take one last look, perhaps—still has a bit of time to take in three of the outstanding highlights of the Capital of Culture year.
SEE THIS SOUND at the Lentos Art Museum Linz focuses on audio-visuality—that is, the nexus of the acoustic and the visual in art, media and perception theory. The Lentos has brought together illustrative examples and important works of art from the 1920s to the present to bring out and elaborate on the manifold facets of this interplay of image and sound.The Schlossmuseum in the newly rebuilt South Wing of Linz Castle is the setting of THE EUROPEAN GREEN BELT, an international nature conservation project running from Lapland to the Black Sea coast. Its aim is to preserve the extraordinary natural landscape that has emerged in the no-go zone along what used to be the Iron Curtain. This exhibition documents the biological diversity of this unique environment.
And to round out these considerations of international art and European politics, there’s an exhibit that brings it all back home. In the 1980s, Linz was briefly the epicenter of the international design scene. Forum Design founded by Helmut Gsöllpointner has acquired legendary status. Nevertheless, the project culminated in local political bickering and the organizer’s bankruptcy; subsequent legal proceeding resulted in guilty verdicts. Now, an exhibition entitled THE “CASE” OF FORUM DESIGN is dredging up the whole story and scrutinizing the real facts and circumstances behind the headlines.
