If closing out the Capital of Culture year in high style is what you’re after, then Linz’s Main Square is where it’s at on December 31st. We’re throwing a party that’s destined to go down in history! The festivities get underway at 2 PM.
The pre-New Year’s Eve run through the inner city has established itself as a Linz tradition. The starter’s gun goes off at 2:30 PM. Five member-establishments of hotspots, an alliance of top inns and restaurants, will be offering delectable regional food & beverage specialties on Hauptplatz from 2 PM until 2 AM.The New Year’s Eve entertainment lineup on Hauptplatz gets underway at 10 PM with music by Linz’s very own cult band, Shy. At 11, Linz09 Artistic Director Martin Heller narrates a Capital of Culture year retrospective. At 11:15, Viennese attorney/music producer Waldeck takes the stage with his unique electronic brand of swinging blues. We’ll mark the stroke of Midnight the way it’s meant to be done: pyrotechnics on a grand scale above Linz’s riverside Donaupark. At 12:15 AM, a high-energy band named Russkaja will heat things up on the Hauptplatz stage. At 2 AM, the festivities move to Stadtkeller: “We Built this City on Rock and Roll” is the last Linz09 party featuring the greatest, coolest and most offbeat sounds of the ‘80s.
