Linz is Diversity
The European Capital of Culture initiative was launched in 1985 by Greece’s minister of culture. Since then, this title has been bestowed annually on one or two European cities. The aim is to celebrate Europe’s cultural richness and diversity as well as to underscore what these many cultures have in common, and to contribute to greater intercultural understanding among Europe’s citizens. In 2009, Linz and Vilnius, Lithuania will share European Capital of Culture honours and serve as Europe’s host cities. A challenge and chance of this magnitude calls for planning that is both meticulous and creative. In doing so, we’re totally committed to taking into account the many facets of life in Linz and the surrounding region, as well as the wishes and hopes of all the people who live here.
Linz is Diversity
13.2% of Linz’s current population moved to this city from another country. Multifarious cultural influences have made a significant mark on Linz in recent years; they have become an integral part of the cityscape and the conception of self of the inhabitants of this urban center that is open to the world. This cultural diversity enriches life here; it’s a treasure of which Linz can be proud. The 2009 Capital of Culture organization is striving to take advantage of this great opportunity for Linz to present its diversity to the world. You’re invited to be a part of the Capital of Culture initiative too! We welcome your involvement and your input! Please e-mail your ideas to projekte@linz09.at.
